I had a shoot last year around this time with Dr.S the dentist who worked it for the camera (he definitley picked up some tips from Tyra when his daughter was watching ANTM). Some people just have that camera zen, that ease with themselves that makes for spectacular images. I can vouch that this family has that quality in at least two of its generations. Dean gave his daughter Taryl a gift certficate for a portrait session and here is how the gorgeous girl rocked it:

I spent an incredible week on Salt Spring Island at a Mud Girls Cob Building Workshop. The Mud Girls are about promoting and enabling the construction of natural building (mostly cob) affordably. A group of about twenty of us came together to live as a community for a week and build a cob cabin. We all camped in a beautiful apple orchard, swam/bathed in the pond, and were treated to three delicious organic meals a day (the chefs were brilliant! mmmmm). I had a great time shooting Lynne and Brendan’s engagement photos. They are such a blast to work with. I’m REALLY excited about shooting their big day coming up at the end of May at Hatley Castle. The castle and grounds are my favorite location to shoot at and with folks as fabulous as these it is sure to be one to remember!
Some women glow when they are pregnant. Calico beams. Although I have it on good authority that it is not just when she is pregnant. Calico is one of those people that have you grinning and laughing and loving life. You can’t help it. Her joy just rubs off. Her energy was such a treat to shoot. Another treat was the sweet sweet light that happened upon us as we climbed the hill. Thanks Calico for such a fun evening. This was a really fun and dear shoot for me. Brianna’s grandmother is an incredibly talented knitter and has made gorgeous sweaters for all the new arrivals in her and her daughters’ lives over the last many years. I was so touched to receive one when my Ella was born. Hand-made gifts are always the most precious and I think of the creators everytime I use them. When I heard that Brianna was on the way I asked if Mrs.Fathers would half knit a blanket so we could do a shoot around it and honour all that she has done…
I pulled an old Remington from my typewriter collection for this special session. Baby Nathan’s great-grandmother was a published poet and she always did her writing on a typewriter. Nathan’s mom has lots of memories of playing away and learning how to type at her grandmother’s. Sadly, while Nathan was still in his mama’s belly, his great-grandmother passed away. We thought this shoot would make a fitting tribute to her.
