Organic Islands Festival

It was a fabulous weekend at Organic Islands Festival. There are always lots of great vendors that support and inspire sustainability. The reason I love the festival the most is the incredible speakers that come to share their wealth of knowledge.

Percy Schmeiser was the highlight for me at the Festival in 2008.ย ย His story is one to know. He is fighting a battle on our behalf. A battle that’s final outcome will not directly effect his life, but it will effect ours. He is devoting his time, money, life energy and integrity to protect our right to save seeds and our right to know whether we are consuming GMO or not. This may not sound like a pressing matter to many of our generation that purchase their groceries at the store and are disconnected from the growing process, but to people who have spent their lives growing and improving food (naturally) this is an issue second to none. It is a very polarized issue and which ever side of the fence you sit on it is impossible to not appreciate the courage, fortitude and strength of this exceptional man.

Sorry, that was a bit of a tangent. Let’s chat about the festival THIS year ๐Ÿ˜‰

This year, the gold star went to Carolyn Herriot from The Garden Path. Carolyn is a local advocate for food self-sufficiency, seed saving, and organic gardening. At the festival, she was having a book launch for her new book, The Zero Mile Diet. She is such an inspirational speaker and another person that I feel has our back when we don’t even realize we need it.

Another sweet surprise for me was seeing The Malahat Revue for the first time. They were fabulous and, come on, how do you not love a band that tours by bike ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Bella Bella rally against Enbridge pipeline.

I flew to Bella Bella yesterday to witness and photograph the Joint Review Panel Hearings being held there for Enbridge’s Northern Gateway Pipeline. Sharing my flight were the panel members as well as Heiltsuk’s high ranking Chief Woyala. The community came to the airport to greet their chief and to stand in solidarity against the pipeline. The demonstration was powerful, respectful, and peaceful. The panel members were taken in a van from the airport into town and over to a resort called Shearwater.  The rest of us walked into town where there was a feast, speeches, and dancing. The afternoon was a moving…

  • A Special Type of Love.

I pulled an old Remington from my typewriter collection for this special session. Baby Nathan’s great-grandmother was a published poet and she always did her writing on a typewriter. Nathan’s mom has lots of memories of playing away and learning how to type at her grandmother’s. Sadly, while Nathan was still in his mama’s belly, his great-grandmother passed away. We thought this shoot would make a fitting tribute to her.

  • Lovely Lilie

This is part one of a two part series for this scrumptious family. They are avid surfers so part two is going to involve sand, surf and snuggles but we wanted to get some images of the first days at home too. There is something so special about those first couple of weeks of settling in as a family. You enter a cocoon and your entire world exists within the four walls of your house. Hours pass just staring at your baby and nothing feels so rewarding. And the love. Oh the love.

  • Growing Grain on Vancouver Island

In 2010 Gene and I bought a share in a grain co-op that was being hosted by Makaria Farms just outside Duncan. We learned how to plant, grow and harvest grain. At the end of the season we were rewarded with harvests of organic Red Fife, Spring Wheat, and Rye. True Grain Bread, the fabulous organic bakery in Cowichan Bay was kind enough to let us use their gorgeous stone grain mill to grind our grain into flour. If you have never been to the bakery, drop what you are doing, go there and bliss out on their luscious organic…

I love doing headshot portraits outside in natural light. I find the variety in backgrounds is far more interesting than what I have in the studio. All of these images were created within a one block radius but result in lots of different options to choose from.
