2015. A year in review for Keri Coles Photography.

I had a couple incredibly brilliant work trips this year: a ship tour with Greenpeace and a trip to Paris to cover the UN Climate Conference. In contrast to some years past, it was a fairly uplifting year to be doing environmental work in Canada (Shell pulled out of the Arctic, Canada got a new government, Northern Gateway was killed, and the Paris Climate talks are being lauded by most as a success). We aren’t used to celebrating this much!

I was on the Greenpeace ship for about six weeks, with half the time dedicated to an action and half to a tour up the B.C. coast to Haida Gwaii.

The aim of the tour was to help connect the global fight against Arctic oil drilling with coastal communities in B.C. who are already opposing pipelines and tankers. We sailed to Haida Gwaii and back with a First Nations delegation that included Taylor George-Hollis from the Squamish Nation, Candace Campo from the Shíshálh Nation, Audrey Siegl from the Musqueam Nation, Victor Thompson from the Haida Nation, Robert Holler from the Anishinabe Nation, and Mike Auger from the Bigstone Cree Nation in Alberta. This leg of the trip was unbeatable with the people, the culture, and the stunning environment.

The action involved taking the RHIBs out and confronting Shell’s oil rig, Polar Pioneer, as it made its way up to the Arctic to start drilling.

I met so many beautiful, courageous, and inspiring souls along the way. Greenpeace crew, campaign team, delegates and activists, thank you for bringing me on board. I had no idea you could pack that much adventure, connection, intensity, laughter, camaraderie, education, love, delicious food, and beauty into a ship. What a mobile gem of an international community.

COP21

The 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP 21, was held in Paris, France, in 2015. What an intense experience. I wish I could clone my body 20 times over so I could get to more of the events. I was grateful to be able to meet up with the lovely Naomi Devine, a seasoned pro at the COPs, and she gave me some great pointers. There is so much happening all at the same time that it helps to pick a focus beforehand and base your day around the meetings pertaining to that focus.

It was so moving being up at the rally in Prince Rupert and seeing community come together with such solidarity against the Enbridge pipeline. Many remote and coastal communities depend directly on the lands and waters for their food, livelihood, and cultural practices. If there was a spill in the area, it would not just be an inconvenience, it would completely desecrate the way of life for thousands of people, not to mention sealife and wildlife. In opposing the pipeline, these communities are fighting for their lives. One of the reasons I feel so strongly about getting personally involved as…

  • Tracy & Jonathon- Victoria, BC Wedding Photo Gallery by Keri Coles Photography

Tracy & Jonathon’s wedding was a stunning event held at the Olympic View Golf Course. The course gave the gift of incredible backdrops and we zipped down to Whitty’s Lagoon to get some ocean shots as well. Tracy and Jonathon are just a dream to work with and they have raised one of the most amazing young ladies I have ever met. Thanks so much for welcoming us into your wedding day T & J!

  • Beautiful & Brilliant Bif.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Bif Naked up at the Prince Rupert rally. I had never seen her live before. She has a casual and intimate air about her that made it feel like she was playing for us in her living room. For someone that has had to face some major challenges in her life, it is apparent that she rolls with the punches and comes out smiling. I will definitely try to catch her show again.

  • Growing Grain on Vancouver Island

In 2010 Gene and I bought a share in a grain co-op that was being hosted by Makaria Farms just outside Duncan. We learned how to plant, grow and harvest grain. At the end of the season we were rewarded with harvests of organic Red Fife, Spring Wheat, and Rye. True Grain Bread, the fabulous organic bakery in Cowichan Bay was kind enough to let us use their gorgeous stone grain mill to grind our grain into flour. If you have never been to the bakery, drop what you are doing, go there and bliss out on their luscious organic…

  • The exceedingly lovely Violet

When I arrived at this shoot I was feeling ill and little Violet had skipped her nap so there was concern that things may not run very smoothly. In the end, we both made it through and I am in love with the images that Violet created 😉 She was not her usual smiley self but she was content so the images that resulted have a neat introspective feel to them. Thank you once again, Violet, for making my day brighter. She has a habit of doing that. You can check out another day she made my day brighter here….

  • The Flaming Lips

Day 3 of Rifflandia is about to begin and while I will be posting images shortly from tons of incredibly talented bands that are playing Riff this year, this post is dedicated to The Flaming Lips. If there was a roof on Royal Athletic Park, it would have been blown last night. I know our minds were.
