Apple Pressing
Our neighbours and friends invited us to join them for a day of apple pressing. Not only did the day create the most delicious apple juice I have ever tasted, it also highlighted for me all the reasons why I am so passionate about local food production: community building, food security, low fossil fuel consumption, good ol’ back to nature outdoor time.
We ground and pressed the apples outside under an apple tree, sheltered from the rain that otherwise would have sent us running indoors. It was so magical to work in that setting, noticing the shifts in the weather. The juice was extracted and then sent to the kitchen to be canned. A long day of work and many bushels of apples later, the kitchen was FULL of beautiful jars of apple juice that glowed the colour of apricots. There is a strong and special camaraderie that comes from working together. It comes from not just talking of but doing. It is one of the best feelings ever.
